We achieve our mission by aligning our ethos with the 5 ways to wellbeing model. We also make a conscious effort to build relationships and work with other organisations that align with our ethics
We organise a variety of guided hikes throughout the West Midlands and beyond, carefully selecting routes that showcase natural wonders and hidden gems. Our knowledgeable hike leaders ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
Beyond hiking, we organise social events, such as afternoon teas, meals and cultural events to create a space for meaningful connections and celebration of our shared heritage.
Our vibrant WhatsApp community provides a platform for members to connect, share hiking experiences, ask questions, and exchange valuable tips and recommendations.
We regularly plan special excursions, including multi-day hikes (such as the Black Walking Festival), residential, and visits to nearby natural landmarks, allowing for deeper immersion in the beauty of the UK.
Our group aims to build a community that is accessible to those around the UK and normalise the presence of those with Black ancestry in the countryside. Additionally, we aim to empower group members to co-facilitate hikes to enhance their confidence, build leadership skills and increase the likelihood of members accessing the outdoors independently.
Paula discovered her passion for hiking during the Covid-19 pandemic. She began exploring the local outdoors, venturing to picturesque locations like Clent Hill and The Wrekin. As the lockdown restrictions eased, Paula's desire to immerse herself in nature grew stronger. It was during her first group hike with Black Girls Hike that she met Dominique, and their connection quickly blossomed. They embarked on a joint hiking journey and eventually joined forces with Ingred, becoming integral members of the Ebony Hikers leadership team.
Dominique's love of nature dates back to her childhood when she spent her summers engaging in outdoor obstacle courses and exploring local parks. As her daughter grew up, Dominique rekindled this deep connection to nature, and would often get lost together in the tranquillity of green spaces. Dominique's enduring passion for the outdoors and her desire for regular walks in her local area eventually led her to join Ebony Hikers, a group that allows her to indulge these interests.
Noemie (she/her): An outdoor enthusiast, Noemie is passionate about sharing her love of nature with others. Hiking for pleasure, mental health and wellbeing, she loves to bring others along for the adventure, facilitating spaces of belonging outdoors.
Started hiking and camping around the country many years ago. Loves the variety of what hiking in groups brings. Jillian likes to lead walks to share what she has discovered while out and about. The outdoors leave a lasting positive effect on her daily well-being.
Ingred is the original founder of Ebony Hikers, who established the organisation in response to the events surrounding the tragic death of George Floyd in the US and the emergence of the Black Lives Matter protests. Motivated by years of frustration from observing a lack of diversity in the outdoor hiking community "I felt it was time to take action to encourage other people of colour to become visible vs invisible"
